Both projects were made possible through a $7,000 grant from the Santa Maria chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
The highest-place finishes in the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District's history for the Santa Barbara County Science Fair belong to four Pioneer Valley High School students.

SANTA BARBARA, CA (Catholic Online) - The four students earned second place in their categories at UCSB on Friday. They also got first and third alternate spots for the state science fair which takes place on April 30 and May 1 at USC.

This will be the first time a Santa Maria project made it to state level.

Pei-en Yang and Elizabeth Villanueva, both seniors, received second place in the life science division and first alternate to state. They placed 25th out of 128 projects.

"Tubercle Tones," Yang and Villanueva's project, studied and analyzed the environmental impact of noise that a student-built wind turbine creates.

Earning second place in the physical science category, placing 27th as the third alternate to state, are seniors Melissa Garcia and Sharmaine Pasion.

Their project, called "Power Hour," compared eight different motors and which one would generate the most power on a student-built wind turbine.

A $7,000 grant from the Santa Maria chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers made these projects possible. Riccardo Magni, the Pioneer group's adviser, picked students to work on the wind-energy project for six weeks last summer. The time put into the projects were obviously well worth it.

"We were the only non-Santa Barbara projects," said Magni.
